I Want To Be Like... provides students with biographical sketches of historical, contemporary, and fictional figures who exemplify those qualities our society has identified as desirable; courage, honesty, loyalty, generosity, perseverance, respect, and commitment. Students develop important research, writing, and critical- and creative-thinking skills. A few of the people included are Annie Sullivan, Jackie Robinson, Sojourner Truth, Thomas Alva Edison, Glileo, Albert Schweitzer, and Jesse Owens.
